Accelerating progress: Saving women’s and children’s lives in the coming decade
Dear partners and participants,
Norway is deeply engaged in efforts to promote global health, including women’s and children’s health. Political commitment and action are crucial in order to reach the Millennium Development Goals in these areas.
Several important global health events took place in 2012, including the Family Planning Summit in London, the Child Survival Call to Action in Washington DC and the Maternal Health event in Oslo. In the spring of 2013, a vaccine summit is planned in Abu Dhabi. I had the privilege of co-chairing the UN Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children, together with President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria. We presented the Commission’s report, which recommends 10 time-bound actions and provides a list of 13 overlooked life-saving commodities, at the UN General Assembly in September.
The conference Accelerating progress: Saving women’s and children’s lives in the coming decade will bring together prominent politicians and experts to measure our progress so far, and see how we can build on the current momentum to set ambitious and achievable targets for global health in 2013 and beyond.
I look forward to seeing you in Oslo on 22 January 2013.
